Product Guide for Kobelt Caliper Disc Brakes

Die Cast Brake Calipers

BrakeTechnique®, Inc. ProductsBrakeTechnique®, Inc. Products

These calipers are made entirely of die cast silicone bronze with stainless steel hardware. The standard lining supplied is asbestos-free with a co-efficient of friction between 0.45 and 0.55. Patented balancing links are used to ensure even lining wear. All calipers are available with shims between the shoe and the bearing to adapt to thinner discs. Most of our actuators are of the low-pressure type. Air or hydraulic pressure can be used to either apply or release the brake. The fluid applied caliper brakes (air or hydraulic) have a maximum pressure of 100 P.S.I. The maximum pressure for a spring applied caliper brake is 250 P.S.I. To fully release a spring applied caliper brake, 140 P.S.I. is required (for models 5024 & 5207).

Product Guide for Kobelt Air Cooled Draw-Works Disc Brakes

Air Cooled Draw-Works Disc Brakes

BrakeTechnique®, Inc. Products

Kobelt was the world’s first company to pioneer air cooled disc brakes for draw-works applications. It used to be considered fast work to drop a 60 ft. drill pipe in 72 seconds. Rigs equipped with Kobelt disc brakes now drop a 60 ft. drill pipe in 35 second intervals. Kobelt’s air cooled disc brakes are designed to perform without the assistance of water spray or internal water cooling. A lever system similar to the regular brake caliper is used, but instead of using air or spring applied actuators, a maxi pot is installed (such as those typically used in trucks). This configuration allows the operator to use an emergency brake when there is no air available. It is also optimum for use locking up an inactive draw-works. Many patents have been issued to Kobelt over the years, specifically due to their relentless search for the most effective mechanical designs for draw-works disc brakes.

Product Guide for Kobelt High Energy Input Brake Calipers

High Energy Input Brake Calipers

BrakeTechnique®, Inc. ProductsBrakeTechnique®, Inc. Products

These calipers were designed for extremely high energy input applications. They have a large shoe area which gives them long brake lining life. The brake lining supplied with these calipers has a coefficient of friction between 0.45 to 0.55. These calipers are available in pressure applied or spring applied. Air or hydraulic pressure can be used to either apply or release the brake. The maximum pressure for the pressure applied models is 100 P.S.I. (6.9 bar), and 250 P.S.I. (17 bar) for the spring applied brakes. The torque ratings are the same for either the pressure applied or spring applied version.
